A temporary coverage route

Is there a Medicare route for weight medicines?

Medicare Part D is Medicare’s drug benefit. Its usual rules and the temporary weight-drug program are separate paths.

Medicare program information was checked on September 26, 2026.

What is the usual Medicare rule?

The normal Part D benefit excludes medicines when their use is weight loss.

Part D may cover a medicine for an accepted medical use other than weight loss, with diabetes as one example.

The plan still applies its drug list and prior authorization, meaning approval of payment before the prescription is covered.

What does the temporary program offer?

The temporary Medicare GLP-1 Bridge includes some weight medicines.

GLP-1 medicines copy a signal in the body that affects blood sugar and appetite.

The Bridge’s closing date is December 31, 2027; it begins on July 1, 2026. People who meet its rules pay $50 for a monthly supply.

In 2026, a separate service handles the Bridge’s payment requests and pays pharmacies. Your usual Part D plan does not handle those payments.

Ask the person writing the prescription to request the program’s approval. Ask the pharmacy whether it can fill the prescription through the Bridge.

Your $50 payments count toward neither the Part D deductible nor the annual limit for your costs for covered drugs.

A plan starts to pay after you have paid the amount called the deductible. The yearly limit caps what you pay for drugs covered by Part D.

Even after you reach that limit, the Bridge payment remains a separate cost.

People with low incomes receive no added help with payments through this program.

Coupons cannot lower the Bridge payment.

Does everyone with Medicare qualify?

No. The program has age, weight, health-condition and plan rules.

Patients must be at least 18 and need both a prescription and prior authorization.

Type 2 diabetes routes a patient to ordinary Part D rather than this program.

The Bridge is unavailable that year to someone whose GLP-1 medicine was paid for through Part D during 2026.

The program covers Foundayo tablets, Wegovy injections and tablets, and Zepbound in the KwikPen injection pen.

Zepbound in a bottle or a single-use pen is outside this program. Ask the pharmacy which product your prescription names.

Ask the person writing the prescription and your plan to check all the rules for who can use the program.

A question to bring

Would this prescription go through ordinary Part D or the temporary Bridge?
